The Cambridge Predators

Are the Nashville Predators moving home base to my hometown, Cambridge Ontario? Looks like some people think so. Let’s take a look at some of the info.

Canadian entrepreneur Jim Balsillie has entered into a letter of agreement to buy the NHL's Nashville Predators for US$220 million Balsillie is co-CEO of Waterloo-based Research In Motion (RIM), the company that makes BlackBerry hand-held devices. Think about this. In February, RIM purchased a large plot of land -- 26 acres in Cambridge off Can-Amera Parkway, between Lingard and Townline roads. Picked it up from a home builder. Paid about $3.8 million. Might be a simple plot on which to build grand new digs for bursting-at-the-seams RIM, now occupying 21 buildings in Waterloo. Or the site could land in Balsillie's hands and become a perfect place to erect a big rink for a big-time team. Close to the 401. Close to the Breslau airport, where international flights are welcome. Most importantly, it appears to sit about 82 km from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. You see, the Toronto Maple Leafs hold a veto power over any plans to drop another NHL club within 80 km of their ice palace.

Everyone talks about Hamilton as being the place Balsillie would move the team but Hamilton is within Buffalo and Toronto’s territory and it would cost the Predators too much to stay there. It appears that Hamilton is just a contingency plan in case the team HAS to move.

Don't get me wrong, I really hope that the predators stay in Nashville unless of course they move to Cambridge. That would be my one exception.

Anyway, interesting stuff! Or at least entertaining.

THE HAMILTON PREDATORS. I already have money saved for season tickets.

first off, that guy is way off base about the 80 km radius. that is just not true. MSG is a mere 10 miles away from East Rutherford, NJ.

I doubt they will move anywhere, Gary Bettman is a rod that doesnt respect Canadians and the NHL fans here. All he cares about is the USA calling it, "myNHL" and that Crosby appears on Leno and the View.

I would love the preds (or anyone) to come to Cambridge or Hamilton or St. Jacobs Village. But I just don't see the most populated province with the highest qty of hockey fans getting another team.

GO SENS GO!

good luck with the games!
I wish I am in the US or Canada right now, but anyway, I will just watch the game in cable tv. =P

Robbie filled me in on this a couple of weeks ago - he thought it was a rumour, but maybe not? time will tell, eh?

Maybe then, they would ask you to come sing the National Anthem before the opening game in the new arena? "And now ladies and gentlemen, would you stand and join with Cambridge's own Glenn Lavender as he sings O Canada"....(drum roll)....

That's interesting. I haven't heard that one yet. I doubt it would happen, but who knows!

Better choice then HAMILTON! (oh, guess I better be nice, since that's my husband's hometown!!)

I haven't watched much of it, but CH (the local Hamilton tv station, for the non-Ontario readers) keeps talking about the team coming to Hamilton.

Since Yzerman's retired, I could maybe convert to the "hometown" team, if it ever did happen!

Yeah, I think this is a loooooong shot, like next to impossible. But it's fun to entertain the thought. I'll even be surprised if they end up in Hamilton. I think there's enough support for a team on the west side of Toronto but I doubt the NHL would ever go for it.

Well, I am personally going to do whatever I can to ensure that this doesn't happen. Nothing against Canadian hockey fans (of which I am one, lest we forget!!), but I would hate to see the Predators leave Nashville at this point... they're just getting started. Now to figure out a way to score some season tickets...

That would be heaven! Could they go to London, since London at least has a pretty good sized arena? I saw an awesome article about this at http://thenewsroom.com/details/363504?c_id=jjt Seriously, Canada needs another team!
